Prevention in Healthcare
in room 1 – the Atrium (ground floor)
Led by Dr Jos Kraal, Assistant Professor of Behavioural Change, and Leon van Klaveren MSc, Strategic Healthcare Designer, this parallel session will address the challenges of designing effective prevention interventions. Prevention will play a crucial role in reducing the pressure on our future healthcare systems and ensuring a healthy society. However, designing for prevention remains a complex and challenging task. The Prevention in Healthcare parallel session will highlight the need to design prevention interventions that consider the broader context beyond individual behaviour change, and the potential of non-linear problem solving skills. The workshop will explore practical case studies and equip participants with tools for designing effective and holistic prevention strategies and interventions. We’ll facilitate a dynamic discussion, bridging the perspectives of health professionals and designers to deepen our understanding of prevention and its impact on health outcomes.

Judith Rietjens, Professor of Design for Public Health at IDE, will have a conversation with Roland van Esch. This talk promises to be a thoughtful exploration of healthcare from two intertwined perspectives: that of a professional in the healthcare field and that of a patient.
Roland van Esch, Country Advisor at Zimmer Biomet with nearly three decades of experience in the field, will share his unique perspective, having both managed healthcare products and services, and navigated the journey as a person with a brain tumour. We will have an engaging conversation about how these two perspectives come together. We will explore questions such as; What insights can be gained from these dual roles and perspectives? How can these combined perspectives influence and improve healthcare?
Prof. Judith Rietjens, Professor of Design for Public Health at IDE and Erasmus, will lead a discussion that focuses on patient narratives. With an interdisciplinary background in design, public health and psychology, Prof. Rietjens, together with four designers, will reflect on the conversation with Roland van Esch and explore the complexities of being a patient in modern healthcare. Designers will then share their insights and respond to this dialogue. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how patient experience can inform and humanise healthcare design, ensuring it remains responsive and ‘in shape’. Panel members are:
